“Hello ladies” (I love these Old Spice ads). Here’s a work in progress pic of that Frankie we saw earlier. He’s going to spend some quality time with his friends, Wolfman and Dracula. Sometimes you have to make really tough decisions when illustrating, for instance, drawing only four fingers. :- ( But I think he’s going to be fine.
When I woke up yesterday, I noticed that some people surely did find my Mabel pic, maybe that also brought couple of you, new followers. I hope you enjoy your stay! : -)

“Hello ladies” (hyviä mainoksia). Tässä vähän prosessikuvaa Frankiesta, joka nähtiin aiemmin. Joskus näitä kuvia tehdessä täytyy tehdä vaikeita päätöksiä, kuten piirtää jollekin hahmolle vain neljä sormea. : -( Eiköhän niillä kuitenkin pärjää.
Today’s work. I’m very glad that I finally started watching Gravity Falls, what an inspiring and wonderful show! I really like the characters and the setting (also backgrounds are looking great), I’ve dreamed that kind of a place when I was kid, the whole show just reminds me of my own childhood. I’m really waiting for the second season! :-)

Tämän päivän hommia. Sain vihdoin aikaiseksi tutustua Gravity Fallsiin, että pidän näistä hyvän mielen animaatiosarjoista. Hyviä hahmoja, hyvä miljöö (aika herkkuja taustoja), juuri sellainen paikka mistä tuli lapsena haaveiltua. Koko ohjelma vain muistuttaa menneistä ajoista. Ootan innolla toista kautta! :-)

Maybe it is now safe to show you a little sneak peek from one of my work projects because these books are already out. This is one of the few reasons why I’m a little late from my original thesis schedule. This is a project that was commissioned by Queens agency for their client Kuusakoski Group Ltd which is the leading Scandinavian industrial recycling company. They needed some impressive illustrations inspired by the world of comics for their financial statement book. In these pics there needed to be a moody feeling slightly, but avoid of being depressing. Hope is one of the themes that carries in these illustrations.
This project surely was challenging for me because of making the backgrounds, creating environments that don’t exist and using my imagination to create futuristic buildings and machines. But of course I used a lots of references. I haven’t done much (or nothing) like this before and I’m satisfied of my work. I also know for sure that I have what it takes to finish a bigger illustration project like this in time. It wasn’t easy but it was really rewarding and improving. I’m thankful for the whole opportunity.
This is black & white version of one of the spread illustrations (click to see bigger). The version that made it to the book is shaded with blue and green, but I like this B&W too. There is coming up some photos of the whole book next week! :-)

Ehkäpä nyt on turvallista näyttää vähän esimakua eräästä työprojektista, koska nämä opukset ovat nyt tulleet painosta. Tämä on myös yksi muutamista muista syistä, jonka takia lopputyön alkuperäinen aikataulu ei pitänyt, mutta en valita. Sain siis toimeksiannon mainostoimisto Queensilta tehdä heidän asiakkaansa Kuusakoski Group Oy:n tilinpäätöskirjaan kuvituksia. Kuvitusten inspiraationlähteinä toimivat sarjakuvat ja niissä piti olla ripaus synkkyyttä, mutta ne eivät saaneet kuitenkaan olla liiaksi masentavia. Kuvitusten kantavana teemana on toivo.
Tämä projekti oli tosiaankin haastava. En ole liiaksi tehnyt taustoja ja lisäksi sain suunnitella futuristisia rakennuksia ja masiinoja, joita ei ole olemassa. Tottakai käytin mielikuvituksen lisäksi paljon referenssikuvia. Nyt ainakin tiedän ilman lopputyöprojektiakin, että pystyn toteuttamaan näinkin ison kuvitusbriefin kunniakkaasti päätökseen aikatauluja noudattaen. Helppoa se ei ollut, mutta todella palkitsevaa ja kehittävää! Olen kyllä kiitollinen koko mahdollisuudesta.
Tässä on siis mustavalkoinen versio eräästä aukeamakuvasta (klikkaa nähdäksesi isompana). Kirjaan päätynyt versio on osittain sävytetty vihreällä ja sinisellä, mutta pidän yhtä paljon myös tästä. Saan ensi viikolla kirjan käsiini ja sitten näätte kuvitukset oikeilla paikoillaan. :-)

Olin ollut jo pidemmän aikaa ilman mustetta, mutta viime viikolla vaivauduin täydentämään varastot. Ostin myös värillisiä, nyt on hyvä.

Hmph! I just found out that the Jagger Club in St. Petersburg, Russia has used my Christmas card illustration in their advertising without me even knowing. Original work here. They have even edited my copyright signature away. Quite annoying. :-/ I tried to send them a “gentle” notice by email but gmail didn’t send it for some reasons. It’s also about the principles. Doing like this is stealing and violating the copyright law. Thanks to the internet these cases are easy to find out but also because I put this on web someone thought that is okay to use it… Hopefully they pay more attention to things like these now.

Äh! Tässä illan mittaan huomasin, että Pietarissa toimiva Jagger klubi on päättänyt käyttää mun joulupukkia mainonnassaan minun tietämättä. Ärsyttävää. Originaali täällä. Yritin laittaa niille huomautusta asiasta sähköpostissa, mutta gmail sanoikin, että ei onnistu. Vaikka kyseessä onkin “vain” joulukortissa ollut kuvitus, niin kyse on myös periaatteista. Moinen on varastamista ja rikkomus tekijänoikeuksia kohtaan, olisi mukavaa, jos itänaapurissakin näitä juttuja arvostettaisiin. D-:

Here’s a little something I made this morning. Just wanted to test things and try something different. I was inspired by Shane Prigmore and especially his Coraline designs. Damn, it’s hard for me to make something simple enough. The pose was just too stupid and odd in the sketch so I decided to change it for the final version.
It’s A-ME, when I was about 4-7 years old. I think I was very lucky to live around woods and rocks. I was adventuring in them almost every day so it is certain that I got a lot of little injuries. When I didn’t have bandages, I used birch leaves to stop my wounds from bleeding. My father used to make me bows from a willow tree.
And I’m going to NYC on the next week! How awesome is that!

Tässäpä jotain tänä aamuna tehtyä. Halusin kokeilla vähän jotain erilaista inspiraation lähteenäni Shane Prigmore ja eritoten tyypin Coraline leffan hahmosuunnitelmat. Kyllä se voikin olla vaikeaa yrittää tehdä simppelimpää kuvitusta. Luonnoksen asento osoittautui photarin puolella liian kummaksi.
Kyseessä siis omakuva, 4-7 ikävuoden kieppeiltä. Pidän itseäni edelleenkin todella onnekkaana siitä, että sain varttua metsien ja kallioiden ympäröimänä (siihen tulevaisuudessakin pyrin). Metsissä tuli riehuttua päivittäin, joten pieniä vammojakin tuli usein. Ne paikattiin koivunlehdillä silloin kun laastareita ei ollut tarpeeksi lähellä. Isäpapalla oli tapana väsätä jokaisena lapsuuden kesänä uusi jouskari pajupuusta.
Ja hei, meen ensi viikolla New Yorkiin! Kääk. Odotan kyllä jo innolla, että pääsen ottamaan kuvia paikasta.
I made quite a bunch of illustrations for SAKU ry (Cultural and Sports Association of Finnish Vocational Education and Training) for their ALPO.fi website during last few months. Alpo.fi site educates vocational school students (…and everyone else!) to work more ergonomically and gives lots of tips for better health…Does this sound boring to you? WELL, then you should check this site out and see how to spice things up! If you know some finnish, of course. Website is made by NVL Studio.

Totuus on se, että mikään ei ole omaperäistä, kaikki on enemmän tai vähemmän jo tehtyä. Kirjassa neuvotaan miten “varastaa” ideoita oikeaoppisesti ja se antaa myös muita hyviä vinkkejä luovalla alalla työskentelyyn, erityisesti uransa alussa oleville. Summary of my stuff from last year.
JANUARY: Nothing much. But I got a brief from…
FEBRUARY: ..young singer Dimi/Dimitra Salo who wanted covers to her record.
MARCH: Was a pleasant and enjoyable time with silkscreen printing and I made up this “Padre Muerte” guy. I was pretty proud of him, and I still am. I’m glad that I got a few of them sold at my school’s Christmas fair. Too bad that t-shirts with this pic didn’t last quite good in a wash.
APRIL: This kitty was made for After Effects course.
MAY: Sketches from my A3-sized sketchbook. I had just bought it.
JUNE: Originally I made this for dA’s cubism competition. After voting I was told by judges that it doesn’t quite fit in “cubism”, so it never got anywhere. Also one of my favourite works from last year.
JULY: T-shirt that I made for my internship place.
AUGUST: I started doing some drawing challenge and I failed…again. Maybe I will continue it on someday.
SEPTEMBER: Just an interesting test work from some of my doodles on sketchbook.
OCTOBER: Skull for my website (still working on that!).
NOVEMBER: One of the Christmas cards I made. At first I wasn’t that sure of that pic and I was hoping that I’ll get a better idea for the cards but time was running out and I had to do something, so I decided to finish it anyway. Suprisingly they were selling really good!
DECEMBER: Really, really, really busy month. And it still going. That’s why I failed with this Batman calendar thing. :-( But I’m still going to make the rest of them when I have time.
Illustration I made for work. I’m not gonna give any more clues about it before it’s announced. More info then. :-) This was my last piece in the year 2012, click for little higher res.

I’m very sorry to tell you that I’m not going to be able to keep this Batman calendar in time (just in case that you haven’t noticed). Once again I took a little too big piece for me at this moment when trying to keep the balance between school, work & free time. And quality in those new ones just went too low because all the other deadlines, and it’s difficult for me to try to stand them. Even though the whole point was just to make them as quick doodles. But I am critical (and to be honest; ambitious too) and I guess that it’s not going to change for a while. But I will still finish my list when I have more time on the evenings. Now it feels more like every day pressure. I need at least an hour or two in a day to just play something, or watch ER, or read something or…
I still think that it’s pretty awesome situation for me that my “working stuff” calendar is full all the way to the april right now (with interesting briefs!). I only wish that I would be graduated from school already. Too many personal projects are just standing still.
Christmas calendar stops but that doesn’t mean that there are not going to be any updates on holidays. There’s coming up some sketchbookdumps & finally some jobs that I’ve made… SOON.
